You see that every month has a lot of holidays. It’ll take us much time to talk about them, that’s why we’ll talk only about the most colourful and interesting ones.

Let’s start.

Параллельно с показом компьютерной презентацией идет рассказ о праздниках в Великобритании.

St Valentine’s Day started over two thousands years ago as winter festival on 14th February. Valentine’s Day is the day for lovers. Boys and girls, sweetshearts and lovers, husbands and wives, friends and neighbours exchange greetings of affection. People send each other valentine cards but often they do not write their names inside. They just write: “BE MY VALENTINE” or “FROM YOUR VALENTINE”. Some children give their friends and teachers cards or chocolate. A man perhaps gives his girlfriend or wife red roses. A lot of people go out to restaurants for the evening and have dinner for two with candles and soft music.

Учащиеся читают стихи о любви.

Roses are red Here’s a special Valentine

Violets are blue, with lots of love for you

Sugar is sweet And since you’re very special

And so are you. Here are hugs

And kisses too.

The 17th of March is a national holiday in Ireland – St Patrick’s Day. On that day people wear a shamrock. A shamrock is a plant with three leaves. It is the national symbol of Ireland. St Patrick was a man who had wonderful power. He cleared Ireland of snakes. People wanted to thank him and made him saint (St).

April Fool’s Day is on the 1st of April. English children like this day very much. They play jokes and tricks on other people, even on teachers. When people understand the joke, the one, who is playing it, say, “ April Fool!” You can play the joke before 12 o’clock, then the joke will be on you.

Halloween is a spooky but funny holiday. It is celebrated on the 31st of October. Its celebrations include wearing masks and costumes, going from house to house, collecting money and sweets, “trick or treating”. Ancient Halloween custom is making jack-o’-lanterns. People carve out pumpkin and put lights inside. Halloween parties also include games for children such as apple bobbing where apples are either floated in water or hung by a string. Children are very happy when Halloween comes because they like this holiday and like to be different spooky witches and ghosts.

Halloween is coming Halloween is coming

What will you do? What will you be?

I might go trick-or-treating. I might be a pirate

How about you? On the deep blue sea.

Christmas is the most beautiful holiday in Great Britain. It is celebrated on the 25th of December. Every year the people of Norway give English people big green tree as a present. It stands in the center of London in Trafalgar Square. On the 24th of December people decorate their trees with toys, sweets and candles. Children hang stockings at the end of their beds or at the fire, hoping that Father Christmas will come down the chimney during the night and fill them with presents. Usually Christmas is a family holiday in Great Britain. Relatives and friends meet for the big Christmas Dinner of turkey and Christmas pudding. They give presents each other and say, “MERRY CHRISTMAS!”

(the traditional Christmas song “Jingle, bells!”)

Dashing through the snow

In a one-horse open sleigh,

O’er the fields we go,

Laughing all the way.

Bells on bobtail ring

Making spirits bright.

What fun it is to ride and sing

A sleighing song tonight.

CHORUS: Jingle, bells, Jingle, bells,

Jingle all the way;

Oh! What fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh ---2раза

Песня – Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas,

We wish you a Merry Christmas,

We wish you a Merry Christmas

And a Happy New Year!

New Year’s Day in Great Britain is celebrated as Russian New Year on the 1st of January. In Great Britain people do not celebrate the New Year as widely as Christmas. It is a public holiday but it is not marked by any special celebration. When at midnight the chimes of Big Ben are broadcast they drink a toast to the New Year. People also can go on New Year’s dance. The most famous celebration takes place in Piccadilly Circus in London where big crowds gather to welcome the new Year. This custom is observed by those who prefer to bring the New Year at home. The old man which in Russia we call “Dedushka Moroz” is Santa Clause in Great Britain. Children are very happy when Santa Clause comes to them and give present. They say to him, “HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

New Year’s Day, happy day

We are all glad and like to play!

We all dance and sing and say,

“Welcome! Welcome! New Year’s Day!”

We have talked quite a lot about English holidays today. I think that all of you enjoyed the party. Thank you very much for your work. Your stories were interesting.
