Russian Embassy School Grade 9 Winter Exams



Task 1. Give a talk on ancient civilizations.


Remember to say:

  • what ancient civilizations you know;

  • what the basic characteristics of a civilization are;

  • what civilization attracts your attention, why;

  • why it is possible to see many of the achievements of those civilizations nowadays.


You have to talk for about 3 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/ she will ask you some questions.


Task 2. Give a talk on man’s inventions and discoveries.


Remember to say:

  • what motivates people to make new discoveries and inventions;

  • how one invention can lead to another;

  • how progress in science and technology influences people’s lifestyle;

  • how you see the future of our planet according to new inventions and discoveries.


You have to talk for about 3 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/ she will ask you some questions.


Task 3. Give a talk on an event of great historic importance.


Remember to say:

  • what famous battles and wars you know;

  • where and when one of them took place;

  • what the reasons for its start and what its results were;

  • what should be done to live without wars.


You have to talk for about 3 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/ she will ask you some questions.


Task 4. Give a talk on why it is important to know history. Remember to say:

  • if you like history;

  • where one can get information about historic events

  • what you consider being dark and bright times of history;

  • what history can teach us.

Task 5. Give a talk on the cold war.


Remember to say:

  • about the role of Mikhail Gorbachev in reforming the Soviet Union;

  • how the two superpowers – the USSR and the USA – brought the cold war to an end;

  • what positive and negative effects the reform had;

  • how you see the future of Europe.


You have to talk for about 3 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/ she will ask you some questions.


Task 6. Give a talk on an outstanding statesman or a political leader.


Remember to say:

  • where and when s/he was born;

  • how his/ her political career developed;

  • what achievements in his/ her career deserve particular attention;

  • what features of his/ her character you find the most striking.


You have to talk for about 3 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/ she will ask you some questions.


Task 7. Give a talk on the most urgent problems of today.


Remember to say:

  • how much local conflicts threaten peace and make living in these places dangerous;

  • why terrorist attacks are becoming more and more bold and destructive and cause great worry;

  • what other forms of crime also make our lives unsafe;

  • in what way people can unite to fight these negative phenomena of nowadays.


You have to talk for about 3 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/ she will ask you some questions.


Task 8. Give a talk on basic human rights and freedoms.


Remember to say:

  • what the basic human rights and freedoms are;

  • how well they are observed in your country;

  • how some of human rights were abused in the course of history;

  • how people can defend human rights.


You have to talk for about 3 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/ she will ask you some questions.
