WINTER TERM ORAL EXAMINATION. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA





5 (Excellent)

4 (Good)

3 (Satisfactory)

2 (Poor)

CONTENT

Student develops the theme /issue logically and precisely. There is a good selection of facts and interesting ideas which are clearly stated

The content is presented logically though there are some problems with the choice of relevant facts

Student sometimes confuses facts and ideas and sounds illogical. There is a difficulty in formulating ideas precisely and presenting them coherently

Student does not demonstrate knowledge of the topic and does not communicate any relevant ideas. The content of speech is not agreed with the content of the input

^ TASK ACHIEVEMENT

The task is completed fully and effectively. Information successfully transferred, functions performed within the time limit

The task is in general completed. Information transferred, functions performed though there are some breakdowns of communication

The task is accomplished though with difficulty. Outside (examiner’s) help is necessary to accomplish the task

The task is not accomplished even with the help of the examiner

RANGE

Vocabulary

Wide range of vocabulary relevant to the discussed topic /issue which results in expressive and colourful speech

Sufficient range of vocabulary but there may be difficulty in using more specialised / culturally-biased vocabulary

Vocabulary is quite limited for the discussed topic / issue though main points are in general covered

Poor command of vocabulary which results in constant repetition and inability to present ideas appropriately

Grammar

Wide range of structures, both simple and complex

Student demonstrates a range of simple and complex structures though sticks to simple ones

Student demonstrates a restricted range of grammar structures

Student demonstrates a very limited range of structures at a simple sentence level

ACCURACY

Phonological

There may be 1-2 minor mistakes but communication is in no way impeded

Student demonstrates some problems with sounds pronunciation OR choice of intonation patterns which in general does not impede communication

The L1 accent is quite noticeable with a few poorly articulated sounds and problems with stress and intonation

Very strong mother-tongue interference which severely impedes communication

Lexical

Error-free speech or 1-2 minor mistakes. Student demonstrates control of vocabulary units

Occasional errors of word / idiom choice and usage but meaning is not obscured

Frequent errors of word choice /usage which still do not cause misunderstanding but put some strain on the listener

Frequent cases of using inappropriate vocabulary which result in misunderstanding and put severe strain on the listener

Grammatical

High standard of grammar. No or 1-2 minor mistakes

Accurate grammar though possibly some minor mistakes (3-4) which do not hinder communication

5-6 basic repetitive errors OR grammar inaccuracies which do not result in serious confusion

Many grammatical inaccuracies at the level of morphology and syntax which result in serious confusion

FLUENCY


Speech is practically effortless. The tempo is natural. There may be some hesitations but communication is in no way impeded

There are some hesitation pauses caused by search for language means or rephrasing, but these do not put strain on the listener. The tempo is mostly natural

Hesitations are quite common and may lead to communication breakdown. The tempo is sometimes unnatural (too slow)

Hesitations are very frequent; speech is fragmentary with long pauses. These make communication impossible
