Russian Embassy School Grade 6 Summer Exams

SAMPLE DIALOGUE

Task 1 (3-4 minutes)

You and your friend are discussing different possibilities for going away on summer holidays. The student begins the conversation. You can choose from:

- Scotland;

- Wales;

- the USA;

- Australia.

Discuss with your friend and choose the one country you’d like to go to.

You begin the conversation. The examiner will play the part of your friend.

Remember to:

- discuss all the options;

- take an active part in the conversation and be polite;

- come up with ideas;

- give good reasons if you refuse/accept the invitation;

- reach an agreement by taking into account the partner’s attitudes.

^ INTERLOCUTOR CARD

You and your friend are discussing different countries:

-

+

Scotland

- In my opinion, there aren’t many big cities there or world-famous sights except Edinburgh and Loch-Ness.

- The climate of Scotland is wet. Showers and fogs are rather frequent.

- The Scots have such a strong accent that we’d hardly understand them.

- I think it is a good opportunity to learn a lot about Scottish culture and lifestyle.

-It might be fun to try traditional Scottish food, to enjoy the wild beauty of this remote part of Great Britain.

- We would have a good chance to meet men wearing kilts and playing bag-pipes.

Wales

- There wouldn’t be much to do except visiting castles there.

- I don’t like the idea of going to Wales where all the road signs are believed to be written in the Welsh language.

- Wales is sparsely populated. It must be rather boring there.

- On the contrary, there are many things that could be visited: distinctive towns such as St.David’s and Pembroke; national parks - Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire Coast..

- We could try traditional Cornish and Welsh pastries and listen to quire singing in Methodist chapels.

the USA

- It would take us long to get a visa.

- Plane tickets are very expensive. I am afraid of flying by plane and I feel airsick.

- The USA is called “a new world”. There aren’t many historic places of interest there. I don’t think our trip will be too cognitive.

- Americans are easy-going and we can make a lot of new friends.

- We could never have a chance of going there again.

- We’d be able to practice our English.

- America is said to be the only country where all types of scenery can be seen (mountains, valleys, vast snow plains of Alaska, forests, mighty rivers and even deserts)

Australia

- International airplane travelers often experience a jet lag when traveling across several time zones.

- I don’t feel like spending so much time on board the plane.

- They say it is very hot in Australia all year around.

- We could spot many exotic animals, visit the original landing place of Captain Cook.

- We could go windsurfing. It is very popular there.

- We could practice our speaking skills and compare Australian English with British English.
