Ход урока

I: Организационный момент:

- Good morning, students! I’m glad to see you again! Sit down, please.

- Let’s begin our last lesson for the theme “What is Hot with the Young Generation?” We have been studying this material for 8 lessons. We have learnt about different kinds of youth subculture. Before we began to learn them, we had a question: “Why do teens choose a subculture?” To answer this question we have learnt the following notions: culture, subculture, and types of subgroups, subgroup music and the violence of young people. Today we shall strike a balance of our work at preceding lessons. At the end of this lesson you’ll show us your projects of an ideal state from your subgroup’s point of view.

^ II: Этап систематизации полученных знаний и подготовки к презентации проектов:

- First of all, let’s remember what culture is and what is subculture? Imagine that you are the guests of TV-programme “The Times”, and I am Vladimir Pozdner. There are 3 groups of guests: teenagers, teachers and scientists. Your task is to answer my questions, proceeding from your positions. Are you ready? You have a few promptings on the blackboard.

- Let’s begin.

^ Discussion about subculture:

Teenagers

Teachers

Scientists

T: - Let me ask you, what is implied under culture?

- I think, culture reflects in

literature, arts, music.

- As for me, I think, that culture also refers to the spiritual and material achievements of humanity.

- From the scientific point of view, culture is the total of the inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shared bases of social action.

- It’s the total range of activities and ideas of a group of people with shared traditions, which are transmitted and reinforced by members of the group.

T: - There are 3 kinds of culture. How do you think, what are they?

- But I prefer popular culture. It is mass culture. It is a professionally organized sphere that works for a large mass of people.

- But these cultures are closely connected with one another and one culture is part of the others.

- But folk culture is the culture of everyday life and routine relations of social life. Folk culture consists of traditional knowledge and practice. It is like a habit of people, thus this culture does not change very quickly.

- I think popular culture gives people, especially young, standards to be what they like.

- Of course, they are elite culture, folk culture and popular culture.

- I agree with you. Elite culture is a highly developed sphere; it is comprised of painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, music.

.T: - OK, good for you. But what can you say about culture of the youth?

- We have a particular relationship with the world. A particular cultural grouping is a way for us to express our individuality.

- Our groups are not fan clubs for us; it’s a way of life and expression of our individuality.

- The youth follow certain stereotypes that are imposed on them through TV, movies, and music. In their lifestyle they try to imitate the images of their idols.

- Unfortunately, they are intolerant to those who do not share their views. It’s a specific aspect of the youth subculture that cannot be ignored.

- Subculture is a subdivision of a national culture or an enclave within a distinct integrated network of behavior, beliefs, and attitudes.

- All of teens’ groups exist, as society can’t suggest anything really worth for teens. Being in a group is like living a real life for them.

T: - What subcultural groups do you know?

- Punks, gothes, hackers, bikers, skinheads.

- I know hippies, ravers, rockers.

- Tolkienists, mods.

T: - Thank you for your answers.

- I have a card for each group. You can see the names of subcultural groups and their descriptions here. You need to match two parts of the card. Do you understand the task? Begin.

The names of the groups

The descriptions of the groups

1. Mod

2. Goth

3. Skinhead

4. Tolkienist

5. Punk

6. Hippie

7. Raver

8. Hacker

A) It is somebody who studies the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. He can be described as a hardcore fan of fantasy genre involved in the following activities: impersonating one of the characters populating Tolkien’s fantasy world of Middle Earth and taking part in role-playing sessions as this character.

B) He is a member of a group of young people who developed their own style different from others. They usually have neat white shirts, short jackets and narrow trousers. They like soul music.

C) He is a young person who follows punk styles in music, dress, etc. These people are opposed to the values of money-based society and they express their protest in loud violent music – punk-rock. They dress in a shocking way; they wear metal chains and have brightly colored hair.

D) He is a person who is able to use or change the information in other people’s computer systems without their knowledge or permission. He has deep understanding of how his computer works.

E) He is a young person, usually male, with hair that is shaved off or cut very short. They often wear tight trousers, heavy boots, and an earring in one ear. The majority of them are working class, patriotic, football fans. They are very interested in politics. They are often regarded as violent and aggressive.

F) He is a person who wears black clothes with a lot of silver jewellery. These people have dark black hair. They look as thin and pale as possible. The members of this group talk about being vampires and about the end of the world.

G) He is a person who leads an exiting life of social and sexual freedom. Computer-made synthesized music and all-night dancing is typical for them.

H) He wears unusual clothes. They have a long hair; live in group together, they take drugs. Many of them are rock’n’roll fans. Their behavior is differing from social norms. But they always want to change from social norms.

-Who are ready? Call the figure and the letter and give an explanation in a few words. Who wants to be the first?

Key: 1B, 2F, 3E, 4A, 5C, 6H, 7G, 8D.

- Good for you. Your work is excellent.

- But we have another important question: “Why do teens choose a subculture?” What reasons can you cite as an example?

(ответы учащихся)

- Your home task was to prepare the scene, which could show one of the reasons. Two other groups need to guess this reason. Is the task clear for you? Let’s begin.

1) Father: - You must conform to me. I am much more clever then you. I have more experience. If you will listen to me, you will be able to escape making silly mistakes! I…

Son: - (прерывая) (1-й куплет и припев «Numb»)

Key: “To protest against parents”.

2) Hippie: - We’ll help you to be happy.

Boy: - I don’t want.

H: - You need to be happy.

B: - No, I don’t.

(хиппи набрасываются на него, связывают и заклеивают рот)

H: - Of course, you need. Don’t worry, all will be fine. There will be no wars, conflicts, diseases. We’ll help you and the whole world.

(поют отрывок из песни “All you need is love”)

Key: “To change the world to the best”.

Young man: - Leave us alone, an idiot.

Boy: - I want to be with you. (поет припев песни «Don’t go away»).

Key: “To be in a collective”.

- Subcultural music is an imprescriptible part of youth subculture. There are different styles of subgroup music. What are they?

Key:

- Punk rock, which is characterized with violent words, it is played very fast and loud. It is aggressive. (the Sex Pistols, the Clash)

- Psychedelic rock, which is characterized with electronic equipment for light and sound. (Pink Floyd)

- Rock’n’roll, which is characterized with electric guitar and drums, there are only a few simply phrases in rock’n’roll songs. (Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley)

- Techno, which is characterized with a futuristic, machine-made sound. (the Kraftwerk, Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers)

- Reggae, which is characterized with a fast style called “ragga”, it has a heavily accented beat. (Bob Marley)

- Now I switch on the recorder. You will hear a few tunes. Your task is to define the style of music. Are you ready?

^ Key:

- There is an opinion, that all young men are violent. What features of violence do you know?

Key: vandalism, aggression, gangs, brutality.

- There are different points of view on the teenagers’ violence. Elderly persons think, that more violence exists nowadays, and all members of youth groups are violent. Middle-aged persons think that violence is the symptom of problems in the society. Teens think that their coevals simply want to show off, and a lit of teens think about changing the world to the best. What do you think about?

(высказывания учащихся)

- What is the most dangerous type of violence?

(vandalism)

- What type of violence is very popular among young people?

(graffiti)

- How do you think, is there the forced violence between any creatures?

(высказывания учащихся)

- Now I’ll give you the cards. Your task is to personate the violent relationships between creatures you’ll see on the card. Two other groups need to guess was the violence forced or special?

Cards:

I: - the violence between animals;

II: - the violence between a man and an animal;

III: - the violence between different persons.

- What conclusion can we do?

- the violence depends on a person;

- the teens simply want to show off;

- the teens are violent and aggressive when they are in a group

^ Presentation of the groups:

Tolkienists

Goths

Hackers

T: - I see you are members of certain subcultural groups. Please, introduce yourselves and your subculture. Let’s begin with you.

- The name of our group is “Tolkienists”. It comes from the name of fantasy writer J.R.R. Tolkien. He is a geneous. His books are wonderful and great. And we try to incarnate his ideas and characters into a real life.

- It’s great to wear medieval clothes and chain armour which contrast with everyday clothes.

- I prefer Tolkien’s fantasy to dull reality.

- You don’t understand. We enjoy impersonating Tolkien’s dwarves, elves and monsters in role-playing sessions.

- Yes, we combine the fantasy world of Middle Earth with real life activities, but we make a lot of new friends and keep communication channels open for all who wants to join our community.

- But I think, it’s stupid to fight with wooden swords and it has nothing to do with modern martial arts.

- We don’t need it, your subgroup is only for those who are keen on history and literature or have some crazy ideas about living in a different world. What a silly thought!

- It seems to me that it’s dangerous because some of you choose the atmosphere of the dark force and start to do awful things in real life.

T: - OK, that’s enough. Thank you. Please, introduce your group.

- Ph! I think, it’s stupid to figure as a vampire. Vampires don’t exist.

- It’s terrible that you want the end of the world will be. You are crazy.

- Our group is the coolest in the world! We are Goths, and we accept only selected people in our community. Bram Stoker was a clever man: he knew the truth. The vampires are among us. They are the top of the evolution and only they can survive in a Judgment Day! And we shall become as powerful as they are!

- Yes, it is very tempting to put on a mask of a vampire.

- As for me, I like to be in a collective of young people who accept only selected persons.

- But I like their dark style of clothes and silver jewellery.

- I consider your group is only for those who are keen of fantasy books.

T: - Thank you very much. But now we want to hear about your group.

- But some hackers’ groups are regarded as a criminal community because you can use or change the information in other people’s computer systems without their knowledge or permission.

- If I were a hacker, I would be afraid to lose myself in unreal world. I think it’s awful.

- We are hackers, and we are sure that a computer is the greatest invention of humanity. The computer world is much more richer then the real one. And we are Gods there; we can change the reality as we want. It’s cool.

- I joined hackers, because a computer is my passion.

- But it’s cool, it’s funny. You can’t understand it. I’m as powerful as a God, and I prefer computer’s reality to usual world. It’s much more interesting. I can realize all my dreams there.

- It’s stupid. When I work with a computer I am the most powerful person in the world. I can do what I want.

T: - Thank you. Your information about your groups is very interesting.

^ III: Этап представления проектов:

- Your home task was to prepare a project which was called « An Ideal World from your subgroup’s point of view». Your task was to show it as a short film. Now I want you to represent your projects.

(представление проектов)

IV: Обсуждение проектов.
