The Great London Fire

Old London was a dirty city with narrow streets. Most houses were built of wood. In 1666 a bakery in Pudding Lane near the London Bridge caught fire. The summer of 1666 was very hot and dry. There were no rains for many days. After such a long and hot summer the wooden houses were dry and caught fire quickly. On an August day a wind was blowing from the river. It blew the flames of fire from one house to another, and in the narrow streets it spread fast. The fire was burning for four days. It destroyed almost all the city. But nobody died in that fire. The people of London built a new city. The houses were made of brick or stone, not wood. The new streets were made straight and they became wider and cleaner too. Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt St Paul’s Cathedral which was destroyed to the bottom by the fire.

Help the Earth

Today we will discuss many important problems connected with the environment. For a long time too little attention was paid to the environment. Today the situation is different. People all over the world are worried about the problems on the Earth. Newspapers and magazines write about water pollution, air pollution and soil pollution. People live in big cities and much of the waste, especially waste from factories, electric power stations; the chemical industry is very dangerous. Fish dies in the lakes, rivers and seas. Much of this dangerous waste goes into the air. In many towns and cities, the amount of harmful substances in the air is 10 times more than it can be. Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with 1000 million tons of dust and harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Many forests are cut and burn in fires. This fact influences oxygen balance. Rare animals, birds, fish and plants disappear.

There are many cars in cities and they pollute the air. When cars burn gasoline, invisible gases get to the air. Some of these gases can mix with water and make it acidic. Sometimes the gases get into rain clouds, where they mix with rain or snow. Then the acid falls back to earth with the rain or snow. This is called acid rain. Acid rain is harmful to plants, rivers and lakes, forests. Acid rain pollutes the water that animals and people need to drink. Besides people pollute rivers and seas with litter. Underground water is polluted by gasoline and harmful liquids.

People are worried about the ozone layer, which is damaged by gases. People cut down forests and build houses. There is no place for animals to live; many animals and plants disappear. Besides people kill animals for skin, bones, fur, meat; people catch birds, pull out wild flowers. Many forests burn because people leave fire.

The Earth is in danger. We must save the Earth.
