Britain is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarch. Queen Elisabeth is the head of the state now but she has no real power. In law the Queen is the head of the executive branch and a part of the legislative branch but in fact her role is mostly ceremonial. She works on advice of her ministers.

In Britain it is Parliament that has real power. Parliament makes laws. It consists of the House of Lords and of the House of Commons. The members of the House of Lords are permanent – mostly lords. They have real influence in politics. The Commons have much more real power. The members of the Commons are elected by the people. They control the executive branch and discuss most important political problems.

The largest party in the Commons forms the government and its leader becomes Prime Minister. The people do not elect the Prime Minister directly. Some people watch violence to cool off and such films are good for them.

What are Tanya and Jane talking about?

T: - Who is in this photo, Jane?

J: - My Granny. She is widowed and in a home for the elderly.

T: - Year, I’ve heard that in Britain many adult children put their parents into old people’s homes.

J: - Sometimes they do. But it doesn’t mean they do not care. For example, after her husband’s death, my Granny Molly became unable to look after herself properly, so we put her into a home for elderly people.

T: - Why didn’t you take her into your home and look after her?

J: - You see, living in a home for the elderly is her choice. My parents work, I go to school. We cannot take care of her full-time.

T: - Do you think she really enjoys staying there?

J: - Yes. She has her own room, she is always able to call a nurse for help.

T: - I wonder, don’t you lose warm relationship?

How do elderly people live?

Elderly people become ill and disabled, suffer the fear of death, have financial problems, loose friends and live a boring life. On the other hand they do not have to work, have a lot of time to read, travel, go in for sports, work in the garden. They get wiser, have more experience and the ability to help with advice. While some elderly people see only bad points in being old, others do not feel any disadvantages.

Of course there is social help provided for pensioners. They are looked after at home, others are offered a place at a home for elderly people. They get state pension, widow’s pension, some other benefits. It’s good when children take care of their elderly parents, help them, have warm relationship with them.

Where I live teenagers have few dangers, but even in my town kids get alcohol easily. I personally do not drink alcohol. I don’t think drinking is exciting. But I know some guys who do. My view is that if they want to, then they can – it’s their life, they are free to decide and nobody can forbid them to do what they want.

The people I hang about with don’t really put any pressure on me or anyone else. Dating is not so important.

We usually go out with a group of friends, both girls and boys. Social events such as discos and parties are very popular convention topic among teenagers. At school, politics are discussed quite a lot along with this there are conversations about boyfriends, girlfriends and plans for the weekend ahead. I feel also that the majority of boys are football-mad and the girls are very crazy about their clothes and appearance. Being a teenager is great fun. Take it easy.

Questions:

1.What does this person talk about?

2.What teenage problems does he touch?

3.Does he face the same problems as others?

4.What does he feel about the majority of boys and girls?

5.Does he like that many young people take alcohol nowadays?

6.Does he do it himself?

7.Why do you think teenagers drink so much alcohol, smoke, take drugs? 8.What makes them do so?
